Is There a Grace Period for an Expired PALS Card?

No. AHA cards expire on the last day of the month, two years after your course. Boston Children’s Hospital and Cooper Health both state that the AHA offers no grace period. A card that expired yesterday is expired today.

This rule matters because of the course format. The PALS renewal course, also called the Update, is shorter. It assumes your skills are current. Once your card lapses, most training sites cannot enroll you in that class. Some sites make exceptions with stricter testing. However, you should call before you book.

Why a Current PALS Card Matters in Tampa

Pediatric emergencies are rare for many providers. Yet they demand fast, coordinated action. The 2025 AHA and American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, published in October 2025, report that more than 7,000 children suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year in the United States. Another 20,000 or so have an arrest in the hospital.

The same guidelines give survival-to-discharge figures. In-hospital arrest survival sits near 45.2% for children and 23.6% for adults. Out-of-hospital arrest survival is about 10.5%. These numbers show why trained, practiced teams matter.

Tampa Bay employers share that view. Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital holds Level I pediatric trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons. It renewed that status in April 2026. Many hospitals, clinics, and EMS agencies across the region expect pediatric responders to hold valid PALS. Meanwhile, a lapsed card can delay scheduling, credentialing, and shift assignments.

Your Four Options After Your PALS Card Expires

1. Confirm Your Exact Expiration Date

Log in to your AHA eCard account first. Check the month listed on the card. People often misread the date. If your card is still valid, book a renewal class right away.

2. Check Your Employer’s Policy

Next, talk with your manager or education department. Many employers follow zero-lapse rules. Ask how long you can work with an expired card. Also ask which course formats they accept. Get the answer in writing.

3. Take the Full PALS Provider Course

This is the most common fix. The Provider course is the initial certification. You practice pediatric assessment, respiratory emergencies, shock, arrhythmias, and team roles. Instructors run realistic cases and coach you through each one. The class runs longer than a renewal. However, you leave with a fresh two-year eCard.

4. Try HeartCode PALS Blended Learning

HeartCode PALS lets you finish the knowledge portion online at your own pace. Then you complete a hands-on skills session with an AHA instructor. Many training centers accept this route for expired cards. Remember, the AHA does not recognize online-only certifications. You must show your skills in person.

What You Will Practice in Class

The 2025 PALS update refines several skills. For example, the guidelines recommend giving epinephrine as soon as possible to children with non-shockable rhythms. They also advise teams to avoid body temperatures above 37.5°C in children who stay comatose after arrest. In addition, the guidelines eliminated the two-finger technique for infant compressions, because it failed to reach proper depth. Your instructor will walk you through each change.

How to Avoid Another Lapse

Once you are certified again, protect your card. Try these habits:

  • Set a calendar reminder 90 days before the end of your expiration month.
  • Remember that cards expire at month’s end, not on your class date.
  • Save your eCard to your phone and email.
  • Check your BLS date too, since many training sites ask for a current BLS card.
  • Renew BLS, ACLS, and PALS in the same season to simplify your planning.

Furthermore, book early. Classes fill fast near the end of the month, and last-minute scheduling adds stress.
