Who should take an ACLS class?

Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a course that is required for most healthcare professionals that work in acute care areas of a hospital or other healthcare industries that provide sedation and outpatient procedures.
Such acute care areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Emergency department
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Operating Room
  • Telemetry Units
  • EMS/Fire Departments
  • Surgery Centers, etc.

Professionals who attend first time ACLS training are physicians, registered nurses, new nursing graduates, paramedics, CRNAs, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, anesthesiologists, dentists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and any other healthcare professional whose employer requires this certification for their staff. Taking an ACLS class is a great way to expand one’s knowledge of treating cardiovascular emergencies. It is also a great addition to your resume!

Enrollment and Pre-Course Preparation:

Registration is limited and therefore early enrollment is recommended. CPR Nashville TN limits the number of students who attend each first time ACLS class. We do this to create a small, non-intimidating environment for our students that promotes high quality learning.  Once you are registered for your class, we will ship you the American Heart Association ACLS manual and pre-course preparation packet. This packet will guide you step by step on how to prepare for your ACLS class. You will prepare with your manuals and then complete a pre course self-assessment through the American Heart Association student website before class. There is no minimum score required, but each student must print and bring their pre course self-assessment completion certificate to class. This will serve as a tool to help the student and instructor know what areas to place more focus on during the class.

Course content and length:

During the One Day First Time ACLS class, students will participate in learning and practicing treatment of the following:

  • Stoke
  • Acute coronary syndromes
  • Basic Life Support Skills
  • Respiratory Arrest
  • Bradycardia
  • Stable and Unstable Tachycardia
  • Cardiac Arrest
  • Immediate Post Cardiac Arrest Care
  • Effective Team Dynamics

During the course, students will rotate through learning stations and be exposed to video, lecture, and hands on practice to master the skills of ACLS. The length of the course varies. CPR Nashville TN has a goal of providing a fun and stress free learning environment for each class. Our first time ACLS class can last anywhere between 9 and 12 hours. Class length is determined by student enrollment and student progression through the agenda and learning stations. We do not rush anyone and allow students as much time as they need to feel confident with the ACLS content covered.

Prerequisites:

Although not required, CPR Nashville TN highly recommends that students have their BLS for healthcare provider certification prior to attending the ACLS class. It offers a nice introduction to basic fundamentals of treating cardiac arrest. It also serves as a foundation to build your ACLS skills.

Students are also expected to have a solid understanding of ECG rhythm interpretation upon entering an ACLS class. This is a fundamental skill required to be successful in this course. For additional help, please take the online American Heart Association course Learn Rhythm Adult.
