Enrollment and Pre-Course Preparation:
Because CPR Nashville is a stress free American Heart Association Training Site, we limit the number of students for each of our PALS class Nashville area. Limiting registration to a small group of students allows for more individual student learning and hands on practice. After a student has completed their registration for a first time PALS class, they are shipped their PALS manual.
Students are also mailed a preparation packet that explains how to prepare before attending class. Once students have studied the material they receive, they will complete a required pre-course self-assessment online at the American Heart Association student website. This will be used by the instructor to help place more focus on areas that students are struggling. This is simply used as a tool for the student and then instructor and must be turned in at the beginning of class. Students should also bring their manual with them to class.
Course content and length:
Students will learn how to treat respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, and shock. During the one day first time PALS class, students will participate in learning and practicing treatment of the following:
- 1 and 2 rescuer child CPR
- 1 and 2 rescuer infant CPR
- Focused Pediatric Assessment
- Vascular Access
- How to use Broselow Tape
- Treatment of rhythm disturbances
- Treatment of Shock (4 types)
- Treatment of Respiratory Emergencies
- Electrical Therapy
- Pediatric Pharmacology
- Resuscitation Team Concept
The above concepts and skills are learned through a combination of video, case simulations, lecture, and hands on practice. The length of the class can range from 10-12 hours depending on how many students are enrolled and the progression of the class. Because CPR Nashville has a philosophy of stress free learning, we do not rush the learning stations. Our instructors are there to help each student succeed and feel confident in each skill that they learn. After the teaching portion of the day, students will be provided with 2 core case scenarios and will demonstrate the skills they have learned. The day will finish with a written multiple choice exam. Upon successful completion of the skills testing and written exam, students will receive their 2 year American Heart Association PALS certification card.
